The Astros' FanFest has kicked off the spring training season, but the team's offseason moves are far from over. With a potential rotation depth issue and an infield logjam, the Astros' management has some tricky decisions to make.
During his interactions with reporters and fans, Astros manager Joe Espada outlined the team's current strategy. The plan is for veteran infielder Jose Altuve to primarily play second base this season, with some outfield appearances still on the cards. However, the arrival of Zach Cole reduces the urgency for Altuve's outfield role compared to last year.
But here's where it gets controversial... Isaac Paredes, who has been linked to the Boston Red Sox, seems to have no place at third base. Carlos Correa has confirmed that all his offseason training has been at third, leaving Paredes out in the cold.
So, what does this mean for Paredes? He's set to get some practice at second base and will likely share first base duties with Christian Walker.
And this is the part most people miss... the Astros' current "plan" is likely just a smokescreen. With limited financial space and not enough roster spots, the team's management might just be trying to hold onto any leverage they have.
Houston has less than $10 million to play with before reaching the first CBT level, and the math simply doesn't add up for Espada's proposed lineup. Trading Walker might be a pipe dream, but the writing is on the wall for Paredes.
No team is likely to commit to Walker's $20 million salary for the next two years, and using Paredes as a trade chip could be the Astros' best move. It not only addresses their outfield needs but also frees up payroll for any mid-season adjustments.
So, what do you think? Is the Astros' management just playing a clever game, or are they genuinely considering these moves? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
