A Belconnen man has been charged in relation to the discovery of 15 pipe bombs in Canberra, but the question remains: was this an isolated incident or something more sinister? The 41-year-old man was arrested after police found the explosive devices along the shores of Lake Ginninderra in Belconnen. Some of the devices had already detonated, while others were safely detonated by police. The man is accused of purchasing and stealing items used to create the pipe bombs from a local store. Police investigations led them to his Belconnen home, where they found items used in the assembly of the bombs. Although the man wasn't at home at the time, he was arrested at a unit in Gungahlin. He has been charged with unauthorised manufacture of a prohibited dangerous substance, possessing a prohibited weapon, and theft. The ACT Magistrates Court will hear his case tomorrow. ACT Policing has stated that further charges are likely and that they do not believe the incident was related to terrorism. But here's where it gets controversial...
