Death Penalty Considered for Afghan National in DC Guard Shooting (2026)

The case of Rahmanullah Lakanwal, the Afghan national accused of shooting two National Guard members in Washington, D.C., has been moved to federal court, where the possibility of the death penalty is now on the table. This significant development comes after Lakanwal was initially charged in D.C. Superior Court, which does not have the authority to impose the death penalty.

The tragic incident occurred on November 26th, resulting in the death of Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom and the critical injury of U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe. The attack, described as an 'ambush-style' shooting, took place while the National Guard members were on patrol in the nation's capital. A .357 Smith & Wesson revolver, reported stolen in Seattle in 2023, was recovered from the scene, and Lakanwal is accused of obtaining it on November 14th.

According to the federal complaint, Lakanwal, who had previously worked with the CIA during the U.S. war in Afghanistan, transported the stolen revolver across state lines with the intent to commit a crime punishable by more than one year in prison. He had also been charged with first-degree murder while armed, assault with intent to kill while armed, and two counts of possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, in violation of D.C. Code. Lakanwal has not yet entered a plea to the federal charges.

The transfer to federal court ensures a thorough and deliberate examination of the case, with the potential for the death penalty to be considered. This decision highlights the gravity of the situation and the need for a comprehensive legal process to address the alleged crimes.
