Diane Morgan, best known for her work on Motherland and the satirical Philomena Cunk, has taken on a new role as patron of a small cat rescue in south Wales. Moggies Cat Rescue, located in Aberdare, Rhondda Cynon Taf, was founded 12 years ago by Eileen Sewell and Doreen Miller and recently achieved registered charity status.
The charity specializes in taking in cats when owners face hospital stays or cannot afford veterinary care, as well as rehabilitating stray and injured felines. Over the past year, Moggies Cat Rescue has successfully rehomed more than 125 cats.
Morgan, who has Welsh roots and a known soft spot for animals, said she was moved by the charity’s mission. She described feeling “really touched” by the work they do. Earlier in the month, she visited the centre to meet founder Doreen Miller and several foster cats, and she spoke with a number of staff members.
“I’m a strong supporter of animal rights, and when I learned about what Doreen and Eileen are striving to achieve, it truly resonated with me,” Morgan commented. “They work tirelessly to provide shelter and medical care to injured or unwanted cats, relying entirely on donations. Their kindness is heartwarming.”
During her visit, Morgan met Zowzi, a cat who required extensive medical treatment that her previous owners, who lacked insurance, could not fund. Since then, Zowzi has found a new home with a loving family, according to staff member Nikki.
Morgan’s appearance comes amid ongoing work by Moggies Cat Rescue to coordinate with local social services for families who suddenly must place their pets when hospitalized. The charity also assists with stray cats, those injured on roads, and pets belonging to owners facing mental health challenges who can no longer provide care. They support individuals fleeing domestic abuse who fear for their pets’ futures if they leave home.
A veterinary partner helps rehabilitate ill cats, ensuring they are vaccinated and neutered before adoption. Prospective adopters undergo an interview process and home checks to ensure a good match for every cat.
