Elena Rybakina's Childhood Coach Recounts a Controversial Encounter with Stefano Vukov
Elena Rybakina's childhood coach, Evgenia Kulinovskaya, reveals a fascinating story about a potential rift between Rybakina and her current coach, Stefano Vukov. Kulinovskaya, a former top-100 player, shares her perspective on the situation, offering a unique insight into the dynamics between coaches and athletes.
The story begins with Kulinovskaya's transition from a professional player to a coach in 2004. She became Rybakina's coach when the latter was based in Moscow, marking the start of a successful junior career. However, the relationship took an interesting turn when Rybakina switched to professional tennis and began working with Vukov in 2019.
Kulinovskaya explains that Vukov initially expressed concerns about Rybakina's visits, fearing that she might try to take her away from his guidance. This led to a tense situation, with Vukov worried about losing his star pupil. But the story takes a positive turn when Kulinovskaya and Vukov met and discussed their concerns.
"Stefano was very worried that someone might want to take Rybakina away," Kulinovskaya said. "But after we talked, he realized that I wasn't planning to interfere. He calmed down and understood that I was just there to support her."
This encounter led to a productive collaboration between Kulinovskaya and Vukov. Kulinovskaya advised Rybakina to trust Vukov, as they were achieving great results together. She noted the differences in their communication styles, with Vukov being more talkative and Rybakina needing to adapt to his approach.
"I don’t talk that much, while Stefano talks a lot, and Lena needed to adapt to him," Kulinovskaya explained. "But I told her to hang in there, no matter how difficult it seemed."
Interestingly, Kulinovskaya revealed that Vukov now encourages Rybakina to visit her childhood coach, showing a mature and collaborative approach to their coaching relationship.
Under Vukov's guidance, Rybakina has achieved remarkable success, winning two Grand Slams, a WTA Finals title, and reaching a career-high ranking of No. 3 in the world. This story highlights the complex dynamics between coaches and athletes, and how open communication can lead to a harmonious and productive working relationship.
