"If history has a way of repeating itself, then Ian Cunningham is destined to be a general manager." This bold statement made back in 2007 has now become a remarkable reality for Cunningham, who is currently making headlines as the general manager of the Atlanta Falcons.
In Flowery Branch, Georgia, not long before his college football journey concluded, Ian Cunningham, a formidable offensive lineman weighing 298 pounds, had an insightful conversation with Jeff White, a staff writer for the Richmond Times-Dispatch. At that time, the University of Virginia was gearing up to compete against Texas Tech in the Gator Bowl on New Year’s Day, 2008.
As the game approached, Cunningham, along with his father Louis, took a moment to reflect on the young athlete's college career. During his time at Virginia, Cunningham had secured a solid reputation with 31 starts primarily as a guard on the offensive line.
What Ian didn’t realize at that moment was that this interview would foreshadow his future role nearly two decades later—one that he had always dreamed of: becoming a general manager of a professional football team.
"People suggest that I should consider law school," Cunningham mentioned in a December 2007 article from the Richmond Times-Dispatch. "I’ve also had teachers recommend business school and various other paths. Honestly, I’m going to play football as long as possible, and if luck is on my side, I’ll continue for a while longer. Ultimately, my aim is to become a general manager for a professional football team."
His father voiced strong support for his aspirations, even predicting, "If history holds true, he’ll either be a general manager or even an owner of a team."
From an early age, Cunningham was cultivating this dream. Although he hoped to extend his playing career, reality set in when he signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2008. By the end of that same year, however, he transitioned from wearing a helmet to donning a suit, embarking on his professional journey as a player personnel assistant with the Ravens, where he spent five seasons. He later took on the role of area scout until 2016.
Fast forward to 2017, and Cunningham’s career was on the fast track; he relocated to Philadelphia to take on the position of director of college scouting for the Eagles. Before his recent tenure as the assistant general manager under Ryan Poles with the Chicago Bears, he served as the Eagles’ director of player personnel in 2021.
Now, after contributing to the transformation of the Bears over the last few years, Ian Cunningham’s long-held dream has finally materialized as he steps into the role of general manager with the Falcons.
In that same December 2007 article, Al Groh, the then-head coach of Virginia, was quoted reflecting on Cunningham’s impact and readiness for his next life chapter. "It will definitely feel different without Ian here, not just because of his physical presence. He has always exhibited a maturity beyond his years. In simpler terms, Ian is more than prepared to enter the real world as an adult."
Indeed, it’s a vast world out there, and Cunningham has landed precisely where he envisioned all those years ago.
