The UK government has stepped in, preparing to issue its first-ever advice to parents on managing screen use for children under five. Research reveals a stark contrast: toddlers with high screen time (around five hours daily) lag significantly in vocabulary compared to those with moderate use (approximately 44 minutes).

With nearly all two-year-olds now exposed to screens daily, the education secretary, Bridget Phillipson, emphasizes the need for a balanced approach. She highlights the concern that excessive passive screen time may hinder crucial talking, playing, and reading experiences essential for early childhood development.

In April, the government will release its guidance, offering tips on integrating screen time into these vital activities. A panel, led by Rachel de Souza and Prof Russell Viner, will review the latest evidence and seek parental input to craft this guidance.

The debate extends beyond screen time. The UK's NASUWT teaching union calls for a ban on social media for under-16s, citing mental health and concentration concerns. This proposal has gained traction, with Phillipson previously expressing interest in exploring a smartphone ban in schools.

Government-commissioned research surveyed caregivers of over 4,700 children, revealing that at two years old, 98% engage with screens for an average of 127 minutes daily. This figure was significantly lower at nine months, averaging 29 minutes.

The World Health Organization recommends a maximum of one hour of screen time daily for children aged two to four. The research further highlights that higher screen time is independently linked to lower vocabulary development, with a notable difference between high and low screen time groups.

However, the study also finds that, overall, children's vocabulary development remains consistent with previous cohorts from 2017 to 2020. Additionally, the research identifies behavioral and emotional concerns in a quarter of the surveyed children.

Neil Leitch, CEO of the Early Years Alliance, welcomes the guidance but emphasizes the need for a comprehensive approach, including online safety and digital literacy. He stresses the importance of recognizing digital media's role in children's lives and ensuring they develop the skills to navigate the digital world successfully.
