A heartwarming initiative has taken root at York Station, and it's not just any ordinary innovation - it's a public piano! This unique collaboration between the Richard Shephard Music Foundation (RSMF), London North Eastern Railway (LNER), and Piano Equals is a delightful surprise for commuters and visitors alike.
But here's where it gets controversial... The piano isn't just a fun addition to the station; it's a powerful tool for social change. RSMF, a charity founded in memory of composer Dr. Richard Shephard, has a bold mission: to bring music education to as many children as possible.
Cathy Grant, CEO of RSMF, explains, "We wanted to bring music to a public space and support young musicians. We heard about this amazing initiative to repurpose old pianos and put them in public places, and we had to be a part of it."
The piano, sourced from Millers Music in Cambridge, was delivered to York Station with the help of LNER. It's a trial run, but one with a powerful impact. "It's about raising awareness for our charity and bringing joy to people's lives, even if it's just for a moment as they pass through York," Cathy adds.
And joy it brings! James Downey, Finance Director at LNER and RSMF trustee, shares, "There's always someone playing. Last night, I heard a lady playing Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata beautifully. It's these little moments that make a difference."
RSMF has had an incredible year, reaching over 8,685 children with weekly music lessons through partnerships with 34 schools. This milestone puts them well on track to achieve their goal of teaching 10,000 children weekly by 2026, a target that will ensure almost one in seven primary-aged children in the region has access to quality music education.
Cathy observes, "I've seen people of all ages playing. It's wonderful to see adults expressing themselves through music, and it's a powerful reminder of the impact music can have on our lives."
The public piano is here to stay at York Station for the foreseeable future. "We'll tune it regularly and have people checking on it to ensure it's in top condition," Cathy assures.
James adds, "We're always looking for ways to enhance our stations, and this partnership with RSMF is a fantastic way to do that."
RSMF is eager to expand its reach and impact. Cathy encourages schools in the area to reach out, especially those struggling to provide weekly music education. "We're teaching 10,000 children music weekly across the region, and we have big ambitions to grow this further. Who knows, we might just find the next musical sensation!"
