Lakkundi Treasure: Karnataka's Archaeological Find & Family Reward! (2026)

Imagine unearthing a hidden treasure that dates back over a century! This intriguing discovery occurred in Lakkundi, located in the Gadag district of Karnataka, where the local Department of Archaeology, Museum and Heritage has officially classified a collection of gold ornaments found in a copper pot as a ‘treasure’. Adding to the excitement, they plan to recommend that the family responsible for this remarkable find receive a financial reward equivalent to one-fifth of the total value of the ornaments.

Among the treasures unearthed were approximately 500 grams of exquisite jewelry, including rings, a bracelet, and a bangle, all carefully preserved within the copper vessel. Dr. Shejeshwar R, the Director of the Department of Archaeology, Museum and Heritage, visited the site on Monday, confirming that these ornaments are certainly over a century old. He emphasized, "Any item older than 100 years is classified as an antique, and thus considered a treasure."

This declaration comes in stark contrast to the recent assertions made by Ramesh Mulimani, a Senior Archaeologist from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), who had previously visited the area. He dismissed the notion of the ornaments being a buried treasure from centuries past, suggesting instead that they may have been interred by the ancestors of the current homeowners.

Despite this skepticism, Dr. Shejeshwar pointed out that the context in which the ornaments were found strongly indicates their significance as an artifact. "We will conduct a thorough examination and prepare a report for the district administration. The family’s honesty in reporting the find is commendable, and we aim to encourage similar integrity in the future by recommending a suitable reward for them," he stated.

The jewelry was discovered at a depth of about five to six feet, as local resident Ganagavva Basavaraja Ritti began renovations on her home. Interestingly, Lakkundi has a rich historical background, with evidence of Stone Age settlements indicating its prominence as a major city prior to the 14th century.

In accordance with established regulations, the family will be compensated with one-fifth of the treasure's assessed value. Dr. Shejeshwar mentioned that the district administration will soon make a decision regarding the financial reward.

But here's where it gets controversial: should the family receive a larger share based on the historical significance of their find? What constitutes fair compensation in cases like this? We invite you to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments below!
