Malaysia's 20-Year Gold Drought Continues: SEA Games Men’s Badminton Team Final Highlights (2026)

Malaysia's Men's Badminton Team Misses Out on Gold at SEA Games

PETALING JAYA:

The Malaysian men's badminton team's quest for gold at the SEA Games in Bangkok, Thailand, ended in disappointment as they settled for the silver medal. They were soundly defeated by the formidable Indonesian team, who emerged victorious with a 3-0 score.

This final match was a repeat of the previous SEA Games in Cambodia, where Malaysia had finished as runners-up. The Malaysian players were determined to break the nation's 20-year gold drought at this biennial event, but their efforts fell short against the highly favored Indonesian squad, who had won seven of the last eight SEA Games.

The Indonesian team's dominance began with Leong Jun Hao's opening singles tie. He faced the higher-ranked Alwi Farhan and, despite his best efforts, lost in two sets, 12-21, 19-21. This set the tone for the match, as Malaysia struggled to keep up with their opponents.

The men's doubles pairs then took center stage, with Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik facing off against the world-ranked Sabar Karyaman Gutama-Reza Pahlevi Isfahani. The Indonesian pair, ranked No. 7, proved too strong for the Malaysians, winning with a decisive 21-12, 21-12 score, giving Indonesia a 2-0 lead.

With the pressure mounting, Malaysia's second singles player, Justin Hoh, stepped up to keep the nation's hopes alive. However, he succumbed to the pressure, losing to Zaki Ubaidillah in two sets, 12-21, 14-21, which ultimately sealed the Indonesian victory.

Despite the silver medal, Malaysia's women's badminton team had a more successful day, winning the bronze medal in the women's team event as losing semi-finalists. The men's team's performance highlights the challenges they face in competing against the top badminton nations in the region.
