A major transformation is underway at a beloved shopping hub in Slough, Berkshire, as the Queensmere Shopping Centre closes its doors for a much-needed revamp. This closure marks a significant chapter in the town's history, leaving many residents with a sense of nostalgia and curiosity about what the future holds.
Last year, Berkeley Homes acquired both Queensmere and the adjacent Observatory Shopping Centre, envisioning them as pivotal elements in Slough's town centre regeneration. Now, Queensmere has temporarily shut its doors, with retailers relocating to the bustling Observatory, which remains open for business.
Caroline Crowe, the land and development director for Berkeley Homes, shared the developer's plans, which include an outline for 1,600 new homes, with retail and leisure spaces on the ground floors, promising an enhanced experience for visitors to Slough.
The shopping centre, originally constructed in the 1970s, has been a cornerstone of Slough's high street for decades. Slough Historian Jaye Isherwood recalls its opening in 1973 and its evolution over the years, from a vibrant hub in the 1980s to a much-needed refurbishment in the late 1990s.
Isherwood highlights the centre's popularity, supporting major stores, and reveals a hidden gem beneath - an underground pub called the Kingfisher, unknown to many who frequented Queensmere.
Residents describe the mall, with its vintage 1970s tiles, as a time capsule, a reminder of bygone days. Julia Thurauf, a Slough resident, shares her memories, saying, "It's changed a lot... but I remember going to Queensmere with my friends when I was young."
Hamza Ghose, another local, adds, "It always felt like the heart of the high street. It was lively and had everything you needed."
Crowe acknowledges the decline of such shopping centres across the UK, but assures that while Queensmere may be quiet, the Observatory is thriving. "It's eerie on one side, but very much alive on the other," she says.
