St. Knicks' Generosity Brings Christmas Joy to Struggling NJ Family (2026)

A heartwarming story of resilience and generosity unfolded at Madison Square Garden on Christmas Day, leaving a New Jersey family in awe and gratitude.

The St. Knicks, in collaboration with several charitable organizations, went above and beyond during their game on Thursday. They surprised a struggling family with a life-changing gift, offering a glimmer of hope amidst their challenging circumstances.

The Liau family, unaware of the surprise awaiting them, stepped onto the court for what they thought was a simple photo opportunity. Little did they know, they were about to receive a $20,000 check, a sum that would significantly ease their financial burdens.

"It's an incredible blessing," Kevin Liau, the emotional father, shared with The Post. "This money will go a long way in helping us navigate the challenges we've faced as a family."

The family's journey has been nothing short of tumultuous. Teenager Peter, now 15, has battled bone marrow and blood-related issues for years, requiring extensive medical care. On top of that, a devastating fire destroyed their home in Hackensack last year, leaving them with little to call their own.

"We've been through so much," Kevin continued. "But the generosity of the Knicks, the Garden of Dreams Foundation, and other partners has left us shocked and incredibly grateful. It's a Christmas miracle."

Peter's mother, Jessica, echoed the sentiment, adding, "The past few years have been a whirlwind of emotions and financial strain. It's been a perfect storm of challenges, but we're determined to stay strong."

The family's journey began in 2019 when Peter started experiencing nosebleeds and blood clotting issues. It took three long years for doctors to diagnose him with bone marrow failure and severe aplastic anemia. During this time, Peter had to give up his beloved sports, basketball, and baseball, which he missed dearly.

"It was scary not knowing what was wrong," Peter shared. "But once I understood my condition, it became even more frightening. I'm grateful for the support of my family and the medical team."

Fortunately, Peter's younger brother, Parker, was a perfect marrow match, and the brothers underwent a life-saving transplant in August 2024. Just as they were beginning to see a light at the end of the tunnel, another tragedy struck.

A month after the successful surgery, a dehumidifier malfunctioned, causing a fire that engulfed their home. Parker, who was home at the time, continues to deal with the psychological aftermath of the incident.

Jessica reached out to Make-A-Wish, hoping to bring some happiness back into their lives. This led them to the Garden of Dreams Foundation, who invited the family to their first-ever Knicks game earlier this month. Peter, an avid basketball fan, served as the Honorary Coach for the night, working alongside Mike Brown and the team's superstars.

"It was an incredible experience," Peter recalled. "Standing on the court with my idols was surreal. I got to be part of the pre-game preparations and even drew up plays for Coach Brown. It was a dream come true."

Parker, who bravely underwent the transplant to save his brother's life, served as the player's ball boy during the game. "It meant so much to do it together," Peter added. "We're incredibly close, and this experience brought us even closer."

The family's joy continued as they were invited back to celebrate Christmas with the team. For Jessica and Kevin, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see their sons interact with their heroes.

"We're forever grateful for this experience," Kevin concluded. "It's a Christmas we'll never forget."
