With a focus on holistic care, the new St. Vincent Behavioral Health Campus will offer a wide range of services, including job training, medical care, and housing solutions, all in one central location.
Spanning 7.7 acres in the Westlake neighborhood, the campus will be developed in phases over the next two years. Shay Yadin, the co-owner of the acquiring limited liability company, envisions a vibrant, supportive environment. The campus will provide 800 beds, catering to both interim and permanent housing needs, and will offer recuperative, outpatient, addiction, and mental health services. This comprehensive approach aims to tackle the complex challenges faced by the homeless population.
The transformation of St. Vincent Medical Center comes with a rich history. Originally founded by the Daughters of Charity in 1856, it became L.A.'s first hospital. However, it had been largely shuttered since 2020 when Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, the owner of The Times and the global health firm NantWorks, purchased the campus after its previous owner's bankruptcy. Local officials had previously urged Soon-Shiong to reopen the hospital to address the city's homelessness crisis.
Under new ownership, the campus is now a collaborative effort between the private partnership, nonprofits, health systems, and government entities. John Maceri, the head of the nonprofit The People Concern, highlights the campus's unique approach by centralizing services in one location. This centralized model accelerates access to care and support, a significant improvement over the current system where homeless individuals often face the challenge of navigating multiple locations for different services.
The first phase of the campus, including 205 interim housing beds for individuals with specific challenges, is set to open in the coming months. Additional government grants are required to complete the entire campus, but the team is optimistic that all services will be operational by early 2028.
