York's Breakfast Club Expansion: A Government Grant Boosts Early Education
Three primary schools in York are set to benefit from a significant government grant, which will expand their breakfast and after-school clubs. The £51,000 funding will provide additional places for children, addressing the growing demand for early education and care.
The schools in Clifton, Dringhouses, and Wheldrake will receive the grant, which was awarded following a competitive application process. The grant will be allocated as follows:
- £30,000 for 35 places at Clifton Green Primary School
- £15,000 for 25 places at Dringhouses Primary School
- £6,000 for eight places at Thorganby Primary School
This funding is part of a broader initiative by the City of York Council to increase early education and care places in line with national childcare reforms. The reforms, which came into effect in September, make most working families with children aged nine months to five years eligible for 30 hours of early education and care per week.
The council received a total of £333,600 from the government's 2023-24 Childcare Capital Expansion grant fund. This funding aims to increase physical capacity in schools where demand is expected to exceed supply. Additionally, the Department for Education has provided £579,200 to ensure that families in need can access childcare services between 8:00 and 18:00.
This grant is a significant step towards improving early education and care in York, ensuring that more children have access to quality breakfast and after-school clubs. The expansion of these clubs will not only benefit the children but also support working families by providing a vital service during the early hours of the day.
